How to Fix Broken Email Images: Complete Checklist
Compatible with Outlook, Gmail, Apple Mail & High-DPI screens
You've designed the perfect email. The copy is tight. The design is beautiful. You're ready to send.
But will your images actually load?
This checklist takes 3 minutes and will save you from the nightmare of broken images in Outlook.
Step 1 — Check Your Format
This is the most important step. Your image format determines everything.
PNG: Works in Outlook. Works in Gmail. Works everywhere.
JPEG: Works in Outlook. Works in Gmail. No transparency.
SVG: Breaks in Outlook. Gmail only via <img src>. Unreliable.
The Rule: If you're using SVG in email, convert it to PNG before you send.
Step 2 — Check Your Resolution
Retina displays are everywhere. iPhones, MacBooks, high-end Android devices. If your image isn't 2x resolution, it will look blurry.
The Rule: Always export at 2x resolution. If your email image is 600px wide, your source image should be 1200px wide.
Step 3 — Check Your File Size
Large images take forever to load. Subscribers on mobile devices will abandon your email before your images appear.
The Rule: Keep images under 1MB. Under 500KB is better. Under 200KB is ideal.
Step 4 — Convert If Needed
If you're using SVG, convert to PNG. Here's how:
Go to CrushSVG
Upload your SVG file
Choose 2x resolution
Download your PNG
Replace the SVG in your email
Step 5 — Test Before Sending
Never trust that your images will work. Always test.
Send test emails to:
Outlook (Windows version — this is the most important)
Gmail (web and mobile)
Apple Mail (macOS and iOS)
Yahoo Mail
If your images load in all of these, you're good to go.
Step 6 — Add Alt Text
Even if everything is perfect, some subscribers will have images disabled by default. Make sure they know what they're missing.
The Rule: Every image needs descriptive alt text. “Company Logo” isn't enough. Use “Acme Corp Logo — we help businesses grow.”
